8 Best Folding Rowing Machines In 2023

Best Foldable Rowing Machine Overall: Concept2 Model D Rower

Best Overall
Concept2 RowERG

The Concept2 Model D Rower is truly the gold standard for rowing machines, providing a reliable and challenging workout for all fitness levels.

There’s a reason the Concept2 Model D Rower has become the gold standard in rowing machines. It offers a reliable, consistent, and challenging workout experience that’s perfect for anyone from beginners to professional athletes.

I’m a huge fan of this rower myself, and can personally attest to its incredible performance and durability after years of use.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Air resistance for a natural and smooth rowing feel
  • Modular design for easy part replacement
  • Adjustable damper and drag factor settings for customizable resistance
  • Performance monitor (PM5) with Bluetooth connectivity
  • Easy storage and transport with detachable parts
  • Weight capacity of 500 pounds

Pros:

  1. Widely used and trusted by professional athletes and teams
  2. Excellent customer service and easily replaceable parts
  3. Customizable resistance with damper and drag factor settings
  4. Lightweight and easy to store, even in small spaces
  5. Community for sharing workouts, results, and records

Cons:

  1. Relatively loud noise output
  2. Small and basic screen, though compatible with the Concept2 app
  3. Higher price point (around $1,000)
  4. Seat may become harder over time (seat pad available for purchase)
  5. Lacks some smart features found in competitors like Peloton or Hydrow rowers

I use the Concept2 Model D  for my own workouts, and it’s an excellent machine in every sense. The air resistance makes each stroke feel heavier at the catch and lighter as the fan spins, mimicking the natural feeling of rowing on water.

It offers consistent and smooth performance with each stroke, as well as being extremely durable (I’ve had mine for years).

And if something does break, replacement parts are easily available and affordable, making it a smart investment for those who plan to use it regularly. It’s also super easy to assemble and fold away for storage (why it tops our list!).

When you finish your workout, you can simply push the monitor down and roll the rower to your desired storage location, such as a corner or against a wall. If you need to transport the rower or save even more space, you can disassemble it by lifting the handle located between the two main sections and then picking up both ends to separate the parts.

To reassemble, align the sections on their wheels and connect them using the hook. Once connected, lower the rower until it snaps into place, and it’s ready for your next workout.

The ergonomic handlebar and seat are comfortable enough though some users have said the seat is too hard and they uncomfortable after long periods of rowing. There are of course seat cushions you can purchase if you find this to be the case.

The PM5 performance monitor provides clear data on my workout metrics and offers everything a serious rower needs. There’s no fancy screen or following-along workouts like with newer smart rowers but it’s been doing the job for years.

One thing I love about this rower is the Concept2 community, where users can share workouts, compare results, and access records. It’s a fantastic way to stay motivated and engage with other rowing enthusiasts. I call this the rowers, rowing community.

The Concept2 Model D Rower costs around $1,000 and can be purchased from Rogue Fitness. While this price point may be considered expensive, the rower’s longevity and high resale value make it a worthwhile investment alone.

If you’re looking for a top-tier rowing experience that can be easily stored in a small space, look no further than the Concept2 Model D.

  • Multiple display settings for user customization
  • Adjustable foot pedals with straps for added security
  • Quiet operation, perfect for home gyms

  3. Quiet operation, making it ideal for small apartments or shared spaces

Cons:

  1. Basic monitor display with limited information
  2. Phone holder may not fit all phone types
  3. Footrest design may be a potential concern for long-term durability
  4. Lower resistance levels may be too easy for some users

Having used the Echanfit Magnetic Rower for a while, I can say it’s a great machine for those starting their rowing journey, who want a basic machine and are tight on space.

Overall the adjustable resistance levels provide a versatile workout, though I would recommend avoiding the lower three levels for a more effective session as they don’t provide enough resistance.

The machine’s foldable design and front wheels make it easy to move and store when not in use, which is a huge plus for those with limited space. The monitor is basic but functional, displaying essential workout information while still allowing for some customization.

Other users have found the Echanfit Magnetic Rower to be a great addition to their home gym, praising its quiet operation, adjustable resistance levels, and smooth rowing experience. The calorie count feature has been particularly useful for integrating with fitness apps like MyFitnessPal.

The main concern I have with this rower is the footrest design, which is only supported by the centre beam and might potentially bend over time. Additionally, the phone holder may not fit all phone types, which could be an inconvenience for some users.

Cons:

  1. Lack of preset workouts on the machine itself
  2. Subscription-based workout classes may not appeal to everyone

Assembling the Echelon Row-s Connected Rower was a breeze, with only a few pieces to connect. The adjustable foot support, competition handlebars, and resistance settings allow for customization to suit various workouts.

There’s also a holder for an iPad or phone so you can easily watch your favourite shows or follow along with any online workouts that you like.

Additionally, the foldable design and built-in wheels make it easy to store and move around when not in use.

I particularly enjoyed the interactive workouts through the Echelon Fit app, which adds variety and engagement to my exercise sessions. However, the lack of preset workouts on the machine itself could be a drawback for some users.

Nevertheless, the Echelon Row-s Connected Rower offers excellent value for its price and features.

Other users have found the Echelon Row-s to be a great addition to their home gym, and found it to be a great option if you’re looking for interactive workouts but have a smaller budget to work with.

  5. Can be used with or without iFit content, providing versatility for users

Cons:

  1. Poor-quality monitor with limited and inaccurate metrics
  2. Magnetic resistance feels clunky and not smooth at high stroke rates
  3. Resistance settings may not be suitable for highly conditioned rowers

The ProForm 750R offers a budget-friendly option for those new to rowing or looking for a low-cost addition to their home gym. Its foldable design makes it suitable for those with limited space, and the quiet magnetic resistance system ensures a disturbance-free workout experience.

The adjustable foot straps, cushioned seat, and padded handle add to the overall comfort during workouts.

The rower is compatible with iFit content, providing access to engaging trainers, preset programs, and a variety of workout classes both indoor and outdoor.

However, the rower also works well without the iFit content, offering a quiet and effective workout using the console alone. The magnetic resistance system is quiet and smooth, with 24 resistance levels to choose from.

Some potential drawbacks include poor-quality monitor, clunky magnetic resistance at higher stroke rates, and potentially insufficient max resistance for advanced rowers.

Despite these limitations, the ProForm 750R rower is well-priced and comes with a 10-year warranty on the frame, making it a solid choice for those seeking a budget folding rowing machine.

Many users have commented that they chose this machine initially for its price but were really impressed with how comfortable the rower is, and how it suited their needs perfectly. The rower’s foldable design and quiet magnetic resistance system make it an excellent choice for those living in apartments or shared spaces.

Best Magnetic Folding Rowing Machine: Circuit Fitness Deluxe Foldable Magnetic Rower

Key Features and Specifications

  • Budget-friendly rowing machine with magnetic resistance
  • Foldable design with wheels for easy storage
  • Supports users up to 300 lbs
  • 8 levels of magnetic resistance
  • Large LCD screen displaying workout data
  • Compatible with a chest strap for heart rate monitoring (not included)
  • 2-year limited warranty
  • Kinomap App compatibility for personalized visual workout sessions

Pros:

  1. Quiet and smooth operation
  2. Easy assembly and foldable design for convenient storage
  3. Comfortable seat, wide footrests, and foam-covered handle
  4. Goal-based workouts and manual and race modes
  5. ANT+ HRM compatibility for heart rate monitoring

Cons:

  1. No backlight on the LCD screen
  2. Chest strap for heart rate monitoring not included
  3. Inclined seat rail may cause discomfort during workouts
  4. Inaccurate and unstable strokes per minute (SPM) calculation

Assembly is straightforward, meaning youll be set up and ready to row in no time.  The rower features 8 levels of magnetic resistance, providing a range of workout intensities. Although the resistance is not as consistent as higher priced rowers so isn’t suitable for more experienced trainees.

The large LCD screen displays workout data and allows for goal-based workouts, as well as manual and race modes. However, it does not control resistance levels, and the lack of a backlight may be an inconvenience for some users.

The Circuit Fitness Deluxe is compatible with a chest strap for heart rate monitoring, but the strap is not included.

The inclined seat rail is a bit disappointing as it caused a bit of discomfort during longer workouts. Also, the strokes per minute (SPM) calculation is widely inaccurate and unstable so you can pretty much ignore it altogether.

Of course the rower can be folded and also has wheels making it easier for those who would need to transport it before and after a workout.

With the Circuit Fitness Deluxe, you can connect your smart device via Bluetooth meaning you can use apps such as Kinomap for personalized visual workout sessions.

Best Compact Foldable Rowing Machine: Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rower

Best Compact Foldable Rowing Machine: Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5515 Magnetic Rower

Best Compact Foldable Rowing Machine
Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5515 Magnetic Rowing Machine

The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RW5515 is a quiet, affordable magnetic rowing machine with 8 resistance levels and a comfortable design.

The Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rower is a budget-friendly option that seems to be a big hit for those who don’t want to break the bank.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Easy assembly and well-packaged components
  • High-quality, comfortable seat with smooth and quiet motion
  • Suitable for taller users (up to 6’6″)
  • Adjustable back legs for leveling the rower on uneven surfaces
  • Simple foot pedals with single Velcro strap
  • Easy-to-use control module with multiple workout modes and adjustable resistance (1-8)
  • Comfortable and sturdy handle with a belt drive system
  • 250-pound weight capacity and rollers on the front for easy transportation
  • Folds up easily for storage

  1. Affordable, compact, and foldable design, perfect for home gyms and small spaces
  2. Suitable for users of all sizes, including taller individuals
  3. Quiet and smooth magnetic resistance system
  4. Easy assembly and leveling on uneven surfaces
  5. Decent control module with multiple workout modes and resistance levels

Cons:

  1. Limited compression stroke, potentially restricting range of motion for some users
  2. Flimsy plastic footplates, less durable compared to higher-end models
  3. Simple monitor lacking essential performance metrics
  4. Velcro straps on foot pedals may not provide a secure fit for all users
  5. Return motion not as smooth as more expensive rowers

I’ve been using the Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rower for a few weeks now, and I’ve been quite impressed with its performance for its price range. The rower is comfortable, quiet, and provides a good workout. However, there are some big limitations.

For example, the machine only allows for a three-quarters compression stroke meaning you won’t be able to carry out the full range of motion when rowing.  The build quality of the machine is also not the best with flimsier plastic components that feel like they could break over time.

While this rower is perfect for those starting their fitness journey or for casual use, I would recommend saving up and investing in a higher-end rowing machine if rowing is going to be a main part of your fitness routine. That said, the Sunny Health Magnetic Rower is still a fantastic option for those on a tight budget and limited space.

Other users who have tried this rower mention how its compact design, makes it suitable for apartments or smaller living spaces. There is also a noticeable change in resistance as you go through the settings which is not always the case in cheaper rowers.

The first part of the stroke is quite smooth however the return motion is not as smooth, requiring more control.

The Sunny Health & Fitness Magnetic Rower can be purchased from Amazon, with its budget-friendly price making it an attractive option for those looking to save money.

  • Adjustable cushioned footrests
  • Ergonomic molded seat
  • Maximum user weight capacity of 350 lbs

Pros:

  1. Affordable and portable design
  2. Quiet operation
  3. Easy storage with folding frame and transport wheels
  4. Comfortable seat and footrests
  5. Sturdy construction

Cons:

  1. Limited programming options
  2. Basic console display

The Horizon Oxford 3 Rower stands out for its affordability, solid build, and unique features such as the adjustable console. With air resistance for a natural motion and a sturdy build, the Oxford 3 caters to users looking for a reliable and comfortable rowing experience.

The adjustable console, easy-grip foam handles, adjustable oversized pedals, and cushioned seat provide a comfortable rowing experience for most users.

Although the Oxford 3 has limited programming options and a basic console, it does offer preset workouts which are actually quite rare on the more affordable rowers.

The machine itself is pretty quiet in operation and can be easily stored, making it a smart choice for those who are budget-conscious.

The Oxford 3’s warranty is also reasonable, offering lifetime coverage on the frame, 3 years on electronics, and 1 year on parts and labor.

Best Adjustable Resistance Folding Rowing Machine: Merax Magnetic Rowing Machine

Best Adjustable Resistance Folding Rower
Merax Magnetic Exercise Rower

The Merax Magnetic Rowing Machine is a budget-friendly, space-saving option with smooth and quiet operation. Ideal for beginners and small spaces, it offers decent performance but lacks advanced features and workout data tracking.

As a budget-friendly option with decent performance, the Merax Magnetic Rowing Machine has a lot to offer for those seeking an affordable and space-saving workout solution.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Affordable pricing with solid performance
  • Easy assembly in just 20 minutes
  • Comfortable seat and long rail for taller users
  • Quiet magnetic resistance, suitable for apartment living
  • Supports users up to 330 lbs

Pros:

  1. Budget-friendly option with decent performance
  2. Easy and quick assembly
  3. Comfortable seat and suitable for taller users
  4. Quiet operation, perfect for shared living spaces
  5. Foldable design with wheels for easy storage and transportation

Cons:

  1. Limited features and lack of preset programs
  2. Basic LCD monitor lacking important workout data
  3. Narrow handlebar may be uncomfortable for some users
  4. Limited 12-month warranty
  5. Potential improvements, such as adding an iPad holder or enhancing the monitor display

So the Merax Magnetic rowing machine provided a surprisingly smooth and quiet workout. The resistance provided with each stroke is above what you’d expect on a machine of this price. You can’t compare it with that of a Concept2 or Hydrow but it does a decent job.

Its compact design is perfect for small spaces, while still accommodating taller users up to 6′ 5″. It comes with padded handles and pivoting footrests which were comfortable during use. However the handlebar could be a bit wider. Those with broader shoulders may find it less comfortable than I did.

There are a few limitations that are worth mentioning. The LCD monitor is very basic and lacks essential data like strokes per minute and distance. If you’re someone whos looking to track their progress then this machine is not suitable.

Its a great option for a beginner but more advanced users or those looking for advanced features should explore other options.

Best Foldable Rowing Machine For Seniors: Avari Conversion II Rower

Best Foldable Rowing Machine For Seniors
Avari Conversion II Rower

The Stamina Conversion II offers a unique 2-in-1 solution, combining a rowing machine and recumbent bike. Ideal for seniors or those with limited mobility, it provides workout versatility but may lack comfort and challenge for more advanced users.

The Stamina Conversion II is an interesting option for those looking for a 2-in-1 solution as it combines a rowing machine and a recumbent bike. This machine is a great option for seniors or those with limited mobility.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Combination of rowing machine and recumbent bike
  • Heavy-duty design, weighing over 100 pounds
  • Quiet and smooth magnetic resistance mechanism
  • Well-designed footrests and large LCD display
  • Foldable and easy to store

Pros:

  1. Versatile workout options with rower and recumbent bike functions
  2. Great for seniors or those with limited mobility
  3. Quiet operation, making it suitable for shared living spaces
  4. Easy assembly and foldable design for convenient storage

Cons:

  1. Uncomfortable seat for some users, with limited accommodation for taller or heavier individuals
  2. Fabric strap on the rowing handle may wear out over time
  3. Short 90-day warranty on parts, which is less than ideal for a machine in this price range
  4. Some issues with computer accuracy and reliability, particularly heart rate monitoring and calorie estimates
  5. Rowing motion might feel limited compared to dedicated rowing machines

The Stamina Conversion II does a decent job of providing both rowing and biking options, which can help to mix up your workouts and target different muscle groups. This can be really useful if you want the potential to have some workout variation but are really limited in space.

But I think the best usage for this machine is for those who are elderly, lack the level of mobility to go straight into rowing, or are going through some sort of rehab after recovering from an injury.

Even if you fit the bill, there are still some drawbacks to this machine that you should consider. For instance, the seat is not very comfortable after longer workouts and some users above 5’10” or 190 lbs are likely to find it less accommodating.

The magnetic resistance will not provide enough challenge for more advanced users even at the highest level.

The Avari Conversion II is also unlikely to hold up under heavy use or rigorous workouts. So consider how much you intend to use the machine every week.

The warranty is a bit disappointing, as it only covers parts for 90 days.

I believe the Stamina Conversion II to be a decent option for those who fit the criteria I listed above. But for those more serious about training with a rower, you need an actual rowing machine with better performance and durability

Buying Guide: Factors to Consider When Choosing a Folding Rowing Machine

When choosing a folding rowing machine, there are several factors to consider to ensure that you get the most out of your investment. Here are some key factors to keep in mind.

Resistance Type

One of the most crucial aspects to consider when purchasing a folding rowing machine is the type of resistance it offers. This will directly impact the overall rowing experience and the effectiveness of your workouts.

Build Quality and Durability

When investing in a folding rowing machine, you want to ensure it’s built to last and can withstand the rigors of regular use. Paying attention to build quality and durability is essential in making an informed decision. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Frame Material
  • Seat and Rail Quality
  • Footplate and Strap Design
  • Resistance Mechanism Durability
  • Quality of Moving Parts

Foldability and Storage Features

One of the main reasons people opt for a foldable rowing machine is their ability to save space when not in use. This is especially important for those with limited space in their homes or apartments. Here are some key foldability and storage features to consider when choosing a folding rowing machine.

Folding Mechanism: The folding mechanism should be simple and easy to use, allowing you to quickly and effortlessly fold the rower when not in use. Some rowers come with a quick-release pin or latch system that enables you to fold and unfold the machine in a matter of seconds. Look for a rower with a user-friendly folding mechanism that doesn’t require any tools or complex steps.

Storage Footprint: When folded, the rowing machine should have a compact storage footprint, allowing you to easily store it in a closet, corner, or other small spaces. The dimensions of the folded rower should be clearly listed in the product description or specifications, so make sure to measure your available storage space before making a decision.

Transport Wheels: Transport wheels are a useful feature that makes it easy to move your rowing machine around when needed. This is especially important if you plan to store your rower in a different room or area from where you work out. Look for a rowing machine with built-in wheels that allow you to effortlessly roll the machine into storage or position it for your workout.

Upright Storage: Some folding rowing machines can be stored upright, which further reduces the amount of floor space they take up when not in use. If your available storage space is particularly limited, consider a rower that can be stored vertically for added convenience.

Stability During Use: While foldability and storage features are important, make sure that the rowing machine remains stable and secure when in use. A rower with a sturdy frame and locking mechanism will ensure your safety during workouts and prevent any wobbling or instability.

Weight Capacity and User Height Compatibility

It’s also essential to consider both the weight capacity and user height compatibility to ensure a comfortable and safe workout experience. Here’s what to look for in these two key areas.

Weight Capacity: Weight capacity refers to the maximum user weight that the rowing machine can safely support. It’s crucial to choose a rower with a weight capacity that accommodates your weight to ensure stability and prevent any potential damage to the machine.

User Height Compatibility: User height compatibility is another critical factor to consider, as it determines whether the rowing machine will accommodate your leg length and provide a comfortable range of motion during your workouts.

Console Features and Workout Tracking

The console plays a significant role in enhancing your workout experience by providing essential workout tracking and motivational features. When evaluating console features, consider the following factors to ensure you get the most out of your rowing workouts:

Display:A high-quality console will feature a clear and easy-to-read display that shows essential workout metrics such as time, distance, strokes per minute, calories burned, and heart rate.

Workout Programs: Some rowing machines come with built-in workout programs designed to help you achieve specific fitness goals, such as weight loss, endurance, or interval training.

Heart Rate Monitoring: Heart rate monitoring can be a valuable feature for those looking to optimize their workouts or track their cardiovascular fitness over time.

Connectivity and App Integration: Some rowing machines come with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to sync your workout data with fitness apps or compete with friends and other users in virtual races.

User Profiles: Rowing machines with multiple user profiles are perfect for households with multiple users, as they allow each individual to track their workouts and progress separately.

Noise Level

The noise level is an important consideration, especially if you live in an apartment, share your living space with others, or prefer to work out during quiet hours. Different rowing machines produce varying levels of noise depending on their resistance type and construction with magnet ressitance typically being the quieterst and air rowers typically being the loudest.

Warranty and Customer Support

Investing in a folding rowing machine is a significant purchase, and you want to ensure that you’re protected in case of any issues or defects. Additionally, having access to responsive customer support can make a world of difference if you encounter any problems or need assistance.

Budget Considerations

When choosing a folding rowing machine, your budget will likely play a significant role in your decision-making process. It’s essential to find a rowing machine that not only meets your needs and preferences but also falls within your budget constraints. Here are some budget considerations to keep in mind:

  • Price Range
  • Features vs. Price
  • Quality and Durability
  • Maintenance Costs
  • Warranty and Customer Support
