Things to Consider Before Buying the Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405

The Stamina 1405 ATS is a non-commercial air rower, meaning that it operates on air resistance. The machine has a flywheel that spins when you pull on the handle, consequently generating wind that creates resistance. Therefore, your rowing speed dictates the amount of resistance created.

The Stamina ATS air rower draws strong comparisons to the Concept2 Model D. The most significant difference is the price. If you want an air rower with some of the features of the Concept2 at less than half the price, then this one from Stamina warrants a look.

Stamina is a reputable fitness brand that has quality products on the market. Expect the 1405 home rowing machine to adhere to the same standards. However, it is a mid-range air rower, so don’t count on it having intricate features. As much as users compare it to Concept2, the Stamina 1405 remains a budget product.

I would recommend this air rower for individuals who want to upgrade from magnetic rowing machines. If you are preparing to tackle the challenges of dynamic resistance, then air rowers are a good fit.

The Stamina 1405 has a simple build that makes it easy to use. It’s suitable for amateurs, but even professionals will find it more than decent. If you need a rowing machine with advanced features, this product is not it.

The Concept2 Model E or D might be more suitable. Be clear about your workout needs before settling on the Stamina 1405. This review dives into the features of this home rowing machine to provide all the relevant details.

Before you can decide if the Stamina ATS 1405 is right for you, see what’s in store.

Overview

  • Stamina recommends the 1405 air rower for low-impact, full-body cardio exercises.
  • The manufacturer designed this rowing machine for convenience and comfort.
  • The machine is reasonably sized, making it a hassle-free setup in your house, apartment, studio or office.
  • Stamina ATS 1405 performs above average for an entry-level air rower of its price.

Assembly

You won’t have to stress too much when it comes to putting this air rower together. Although it’s not fully assembled, the rowing machine has few components.

The biggest task is attaching the rail to the front and rear base. You also have to slide in the seat, connect the console and footrests.

Any person who is handy with a screwdriver will set it up in about 30 minutes to an hour. Another pair of hands would be useful for holding some parts in place. The detailed manual included with the purchase helps as well. You also get assembly tools in the box.

Resistance Type

An issue that comes up with air resistance rowers like the Stamina 1405 is that the resistance is not adjustable. You can’t set the resistance to match your exercise requirements.

The plus side is that they are the right machines for high-intensity workouts. Your strokes determine the amount of air that goes into the flywheel.

Unlike high-end air rowers, the 1405 doesn’t include a damper. This component controls the air entering the flywheel, thereby affecting the feel of the machine.

Even with this disadvantage, the rower remains a decent investment. A big reason for this is the chain in the drive system. Most air-resistance rowers of this range use nylon, which doesn’t offer as long a life as a chain.

Technical Specifications:

  • Targeted Training – Total body strength, cardiovascular fitness,
  • Dimensions after assembly – 199L x 50W x 80 H (78.5 “L x 19.75″W x 31.5″H)
  • Product Weight – 28.5kg (63 lbs)
  • Capacity – 113.3kg (250 lbs)
  • Resistance – wind
  • Material – Steel frame, vinyl, cell foam molded seat
  • Colour – Silver painted rail, blue and black accents

Build Quality and Features

Stamina doesn’t skimp on quality, and the 1405 is a good example of that. Given the price point of the air rower, the construction is more than satisfactory. The frame is made from steel with only a few plastic parts.

You can be confident about the strength of the frame when rowing. Two rubberized stands provide the machine with ample stability. Although the rubber reduces the risk of damage to floors, I still find it safer to have a mat for extra protection.

The steel rail allows users who measure up to 193cm (6’4″). Size-adjustable footrests are ideal for almost any feet sizes. They have straps that ensure your feet are secure while rowing.

In its early days, the Stamina 1405 got complaints about a loose chain that stopped workouts midway. The manufacturer has since redesigned the product to fix this issue, but it can still happen sometimes.

Display

The rowing machine includes a basic monitor. It tracks only the elementals, which might be sufficient if that’s all you prefer.

The display shows the speed, time, calories burned, strokes/minute, count, and distance. It has a single button labeled ‘Mode.’ Only three functions appear at a time, and you can switch to the other three by pressing this button.

If I want to monitor my heart rate, I wear a watch or the Polar H10. For users who want more functions from their rower monitor, try a higher-end model.

Comfort

Of course, the comfort levels of a rowing machine matter a great deal. After all, you will spend more than a few minutes on the machine, engaging in intense exercise.

The seat of the 1405 ATS is one of the most comfortable for rowers in this range. It’s foam-padded and molded, allowing it to contour to your form easily. The seat glides effortlessly up and down the rail. You also get a comfortable grip thanks to the foam padding on the handles.

The air resistance is smooth, translating to sleek strokes. Another clever build is the angle of the rail, which is slightly inclined rather than horizontal. This design positions the body to recover from a stroke with more ease.

Storage

When picking an indoor rowing machine, always consider storage. This air rower might seem heavy at 28.5Kg, but it simplifies storage.

You can fold the front base backward to sit on the rail. For this, you have to remove the pins holding the fan in place, fold it and then reinsert them.

With a much shorter machine, you get to maximize the available space. Although the rower can’t stand vertically, it has transport wheels. You can safely wheel the equipment out of the way. If you are short on space then see our list of the best folding rowing machines.

Warranty

When you purchase your Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405, register it to validate the warranty. Stamina gives a 3-year warranty on the frame and 3 months on all the other parts.

I needed spare parts for my rower and found the Stamina customer service more than adequate. If you have a defective component that is still under warranty, the manufacturer repairs or replaces it without requiring you to jump too many hoops.

Like the Model D, the Concept2 Model E is the epitome of class. The Model E improved slightly on the Model D, so it has a lot more to offer in comparison with the Stamina 1405.

Its design focuses on ergonomics. A long monitor arm ensures that you can see the display easily from your seat. It has a nickel-coated chain that boosts durability and minimizes maintenance needs. The air rower is suitable for tall and heavyset users with high demands.

If you intend to splurge on an air rower, the Concept2 Model E is worth it.

Another rower in the low to mid-price range from Stamina is the X Air Rower, the successor of the 1405.

Stamina didn’t change much in this model. The most notable alteration is the monitor, which is better than that on the 1405. Although it doesn’t deliver new features, it’s more intuitive and clearer. The footrests are wide and have fixings to keep the feet securely in place.

Final Thoughts on the Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405

The Stamina ATS Air Rower 1405 holds its own when comparing wind resistance rowers in the lower price range. It’s a budget-friendly machine that is perfect for indoor use.

Although it might be a tad noisier than higher-end air rowers, the 405 compensates on different fronts. It’s durable equipment with a chain instead of nylon in the drive system.

When in need of a well-crafted home rowing machine for intense workouts and full-body exercises, the Stamina 1405 is a decent buy.
